Kutch Copper Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Group, has become the newest member of the International Copper Association (ICA). Based in Washington, D.C., ICA is a global, non-profit trade group that represents half of the world’s copper production, with 33 members spread across six continents. Located in Mundra, Gujarat, Kutch Copper is wholly owned by Adani Enterprises, the group’s flagship incubator.

Adani Enterprises is investing around $1.2 billion to build a copper smelter with an initial capacity of 0.5 million tons per year in its first phase. The advanced facility will produce copper cathodes, rods, and other byproducts, helping India achieve its goal of self-sufficiency in copper production.

Dr Vinay Prakash, Managing Director of Kutch Copper, expressed enthusiasm about joining ICA, saying, “India is set to become a major hub for copper and its products in the coming years. Our membership in ICA will enable us to contribute to sustainability efforts and explore innovative applications and products in the copper industry. We look forward to collaborating with the global copper community to enhance the value chain for this essential metal, which plays a key role in the transition to net-zero emissions.”

ICA President and CEO Juan Ignacio Díaz welcomed the new partnership, stating, “We are excited to have Kutch Copper Ltd. join our community. Their commitment to sustainable and innovative copper production strengthens our shared mission to promote copper’s vital role in enabling the technologies and infrastructure necessary for global decarbonization. We are particularly pleased to support copper’s growth in regions where its applications are expanding.”

ICA Board Chairman, Stephen Rowland of Glencore, added, “Kutch Copper’s membership reinforces our focus on sustainable practices and the development of new copper applications. We are eager to collaborate with them and support their efforts to drive positive change in the industry.”

Once the second phase of development is complete, Kutch Copper will double its capacity, reaching a total of 1 million tons per year, making it one of the largest single-location custom copper smelters in the world. The company is dedicated to adhering to high environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards while embracing advanced technology and digitalization. Kutch Copper is also working to expand its product portfolio to include copper tubes as part of its forward integration strategy.

Kutch Copper Ltd., a key player in Adani Enterprises, is set to become an important contributor to India’s green energy infrastructure, addressing the country’s growing demand for copper. The company is committed to sustainable and innovative production practices, aligning with India’s broader goals of economic growth and development. Kutch Copper operates within Adani Group’s metals and materials vertical, which is one of its four major business sectors, alongside energy & utilities, transport & logistics, and consumer.
