Burckhardt Compression has secured a major contract from Technip Energies to supply seven reciprocating compressors for SkyNRG’s first dedicated Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility, DSL-01, located in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. The project represents a significant milestone in Europe’s transition toward lower-carbon aviation and reinforces the growing momentum behind sustainable fuel production.
The new facility will be the first greenfield plant in Europe built exclusively for producing sustainable aviation fuel without integrating renewable diesel or other fuel streams. Once operational, the facility is expected to manufacture approximately 100,000 tonnes of SAF annually, supporting airlines’ efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Burckhardt Compression will deliver API 618 reciprocating process gas compressors that will perform critical functions throughout the hydrogen processing stages of the plant. The compressors are designed to ensure safe, reliable, and energy-efficient hydrogen handling, supporting continuous production while maintaining high operational efficiency.
Sustainable aviation fuel has become a key solution for reducing emissions from the aviation industry, which currently contributes between two and four percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. Produced from renewable feedstocks and waste-based materials, SAF can reduce lifecycle emissions by as much as 80 percent compared with conventional jet fuel, making it an essential component of the aviation industry’s long-term decarbonization strategy.
The SkyNRG facility will use the Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) production pathway, one of the most widely adopted technologies for commercial SAF manufacturing. Burckhardt Compression’s compressor systems will support hydrogen supply to hydrotreater and isomerization units, enabling efficient conversion of renewable feedstocks into aviation fuel that meets stringent quality standards.
Project stakeholders emphasized the importance of reliable process equipment for ensuring stable plant performance. SkyNRG highlighted its confidence in Burckhardt Compression’s technology and engineering expertise, noting that the compressor systems will be essential for achieving dependable operations from the facility’s commissioning onward. Technip Energies, responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction of the project, also welcomed the collaboration, describing the compressors as a vital component of the integrated production process.
Burckhardt Compression said the project reinforces its commitment to supporting cleaner energy solutions and the aviation industry’s transition toward lower-carbon operations. The company believes global demand for sustainable aviation fuel will continue to increase as governments, airlines, and energy companies invest in technologies that reduce emissions while maintaining operational performance.
Burckhardt Compression provides a comprehensive portfolio that includes new compressor systems, upgrades, spare parts, and lifecycle services, enabling customers to maximize efficiency, safety, and uptime of their equipment. With a strong focus on innovation, digital monitoring, and sustainability, the company supports the growing demand for energy efficiency and low-emission technologies worldwide.
