BorgWarner has secured its first global production program for a 48V electric cross differential (eXD) with a leading Chinese original equipment manufacturer. The system is integrated into the customer’s 48V electrical and electronic architecture and marks BorgWarner’s first application of its eXD technology within a 48V platform. The program expands the company’s torque management portfolio for electric vehicles.
As EV architectures evolve, 48V systems are gaining attention for improved energy efficiency, reduced wiring complexity and cost optimization. BorgWarner’s eXD leverages this architecture to dynamically distribute torque between wheels, enhancing traction, handling and overall vehicle stability.
The system continuously adjusts torque delivery based on real-time vehicle data and driving conditions. During high-speed driving, rapid acceleration or aggressive cornering, the eXD supports improved stability and responsiveness. On high-friction surfaces such as dry roads, the system can transfer greater torque to the outer wheels to improve cornering dynamics. In low-friction conditions including snow, ice or mud, it rapidly detects wheel slip and redistributes torque to maintain traction and control.
According to Isabelle McKenzie, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc and President and General Manager, Drivetrain and Morse Systems, the new award highlights the company’s ability to adapt proven drivetrain technologies to emerging electrical architectures. The program strengthens BorgWarner’s position in next-generation electric drivetrain solutions as automakers continue transitioning toward more efficient and integrated vehicle platforms.
