Biocon Limited (BSE: 532523 | NSE: BIOCON), a global biopharmaceutical company driven by innovation, has announced the launch of its Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) therapy, Liraglutide, in the Netherlands. The product will be marketed through Biocon’s distribution partner, Pharmamedic BV, following regulatory approval earlier this year from the Medicines Evaluation Board (MEB) of the Netherlands.

The drug-device combination will be sold under the brand name Diavorin® for the treatment of diabetes and Vobexoryn® for chronic weight management. This marks the first European Union market where Biocon has directly launched Liraglutide under its own brand, representing a significant milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy.

Siddharth Mittal, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Biocon Limited, said the Netherlands launch strengthens Biocon’s growing GLP-1 portfolio and highlights the strategic role of peptide-based therapies within the company’s pipeline. He added that Biocon’s vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities enable it to deliver high-quality and affordable metabolic therapies at scale. Launching branded products in Europe, he noted, reflects the company’s scientific strength and commitment to improving access to advanced treatments for diabetes and obesity.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) therapies help regulate blood glucose levels and support weight loss by enhancing insulin secretion and suppressing glucagon release. These hormones also slow gastric emptying and reduce appetite, improving glycaemic control while limiting weight gain.

Liraglutide is a synthetic analogue of the GLP-1 hormone and is administered through a once-daily injection. It was approved in the European Union in 2009 and in the United States in 2010. Subsequent approvals expanded its use for obesity and overweight patients with related health conditions, as well as for paediatric type 2 diabetes treatment, making it the first non-insulin therapy approved for children with the condition since metformin.

Biocon Limited is a publicly listed biopharmaceutical company focused on improving access to advanced therapies for chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. The company has built a strong portfolio spanning biologics, biosimilars, complex APIs, and generic formulations, with operations across India, the United States, Europe, and other global markets. Biocon also maintains a pipeline of innovative immunotherapy assets under development.

The company specialises in sourcing high-quality pharmaceutical products and serves as a link between international manufacturers and Dutch healthcare providers.
