BASF, the Germany-based chemical giant, has entered into a partnership with AM Green to explore opportunities in the low-carbon chemicals sector, according to informed sources. As part of this collaboration, BASF is expected to purchase 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually from the Hyderabad-based company.
The two companies will initiate feasibility studies focused on the production of low-carbon chemicals in India and jointly assess potential technologies. Some of AM Green’s facilities have already received pre-certification for compliance with the European Union’s regulations regarding renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO), ensuring that the ammonia supplied to BASF will adhere to EU standards.
In September, AM Green also established a partnership with RWE Supply & Trading of Germany to deliver green ammonia by 2027, committing to supply 250,000 tonnes of this sustainable product each year. The company recently made a significant advancement with the final investment decision (FID) for its 1 million-tonne green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, which is projected to require an investment of approximately ₹12,500 crore.
AM Green has secured offtake agreements for this project with prominent companies such as Uniper and Yara, aiming to support various green hydrogen applications. The production of green ammonia will be powered by continuous renewable energy, with AM Green having locked in 1,300 MW of carbon-free power. This includes a 25-year fixed-price power purchase agreement (PPA) with NTPC for half of the required capacity, while the rest is expected to be provided by Gentari, the renewable energy subsidiary of Malaysia’s Petronas.
Last year, Gentari and AM Green committed to producing 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of green ammonia by 2030. Founded by Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli of the Hyderabad-based Greenko Group, AM Green aims to reach a production capacity of 5 mtpa of green ammonia by the end of the decade, which equates to around 1 mtpa of green hydrogen.
Besides its flagship Kakinada project, the company is exploring multiple sites across India to achieve its ambitious target. At BASF, we drive sustainable progress by uniting economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. With a global team of approximately 112,000, BASF Group empowers customers across nearly all industries and countries. Our diverse portfolio spans six key segments: Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care, and Agricultural Solutions. In 2023, BASF achieved €68.9 billion in sales, with shares listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (BAS) and as American Depositary Receipts (BASFY) in the U.S.
AM Green, founded by Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli of Hyderabad-based Greenko Group, is a prominent energy transition solutions provider in India. Through its production of green ammonia across multiple sites, AM Green aims to achieve a 5 MTPA capacity by 2030, aligning with India’s and the OECD’s net-zero targets. This green ammonia production—equivalent to around 1 MTPA of green hydrogen—will represent a significant contribution toward India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and 10% of Europe’s green hydrogen import goals. AM Green is also expanding into other sustainable products, including green caustic soda, e-methanol, olefins, and biofuels, to help decarbonize industries with complex emissions challenges.
