Attero, India’s critical minerals company, has operationalised its new R&D Centre of Excellence in Greater Noida, strengthening its capabilities in technology development, process innovation and automation for critical mineral recovery and recycling. The centre will focus on developing and improving technologies for Attero’s recycling, refining and critical materials recovery operations in India and international markets. It will support process development, automation design and technology upgrades across the company’s operations.
The R&D centre will work on the recovery of materials from end-of-life batteries, electronic components and other complex secondary resources. Its programmes will include the recovery of rare earth elements and other high-value materials, along with processes to convert recovered materials into higher-value applications.
The technology development programme includes robotics-based battery cutting, new battery discharging systems, energy-efficient roasting equipment, advanced filtration and drying systems, automated material handling and safer ventilation and exhaust systems. The Greater Noida facility has received recognition from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, as an in-house industrial R&D centre. The recognition is valid until March 2029.
The DSIR recognition places the facility within the Government’s recognised framework for in-house industrial R&D centres. It also supports access to applicable Government provisions for R&D-related procurement, including eligibility to seek customs-duty exemption on qualifying research equipment, instruments, spares and consumables, subject to applicable notifications, conditions and approval procedures.
Nitin Gupta, Co-founder and CEO, Attero, said: “Attero has built its business around proprietary technology and in-house innovation. The operationalisation of this Centre of Excellence strengthens our ability to develop technologies for increasingly complex secondary resources. With more than 50 granted patents and over 200 patent filings globally, we have established a strong technology base. The new centre will help us move technologies from development to industrial application and build capabilities for the next phase of critical mineral recovery. The DSIR recognition further strengthens our in-house R&D framework and our work on indigenous technologies for critical mineral recovery, recycling and refining.”
The centre builds on Attero’s existing expertise in mechanical and hydrometallurgical processing. The company has more than 50 granted patents and over 200 patent filings worldwide. Attero has also received the CII Industrial Innovation Award 2025 and the Circular Economy Initiative Award at India Solar Week 2026 for its technology and innovation work.
The Greater Noida R&D centre will complement Attero’s existing operating infrastructure, including its facility in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. The Roorkee facility has achieved recovery efficiencies of more than 98% and purity levels above 99.9% across battery materials.
The new centre will provide a dedicated platform for developing technologies that can later be deployed and upgraded across Attero’s recycling, refining and mid-stream processing operations. Attero is an Indian critical minerals company focused on urban mining, recycling and recovery of high-value materials. The company recovers more than 20 critical minerals, including rare earth elements, cobalt, nickel, lithium, copper, graphite, silver, gold and manganese, through proprietary processes supported by more than 50 global patents.
Founded in 2008 by Rohan Gupta and Nitin Gupta, Attero is developing circular supply chains for materials used in clean energy, electric mobility, electronics and advanced manufacturing. Its technology processes end-of-life materials, industrial materials and mid-stream inputs across multiple streams.
Attero operates MetalMandi, a digital marketplace for urban mining, and Selsmart, a consumer take-back platform for electronic waste. Its Roorkee facility is among its key recycling operations, with recovery efficiency exceeding 98% and purity levels above 99.9% across battery materials.
The company also operates facilities in Pune, Bengaluru and Faridabad, a copper recycling facility in Reengus, Rajasthan, and the R&D centre in Greater Noida. Attero has operations and business presence across India, South Korea, Poland, Australia, Singapore and the United States. It has filed more than 200 patents globally and holds over 50 granted patents.
