ArcelorMittal, a global leader in steel and mining, has commenced the supply of renewable electricity to AMNS India from its 1-gigawatt solar and wind facility in Andhra Pradesh. The $700 million project was developed and executed by AM Green Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ArcelorMittal. This marks the company’s largest renewable energy initiative to date.
AMNS India, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Japan’s Nippon Steel with a 60:40 ownership structure, will now benefit from clean power generated by the project. The initiative is expected to reduce AMNS India’s carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes annually, contributing to its goal of cutting carbon intensity by 20% by 2030, compared to 2021 levels.
ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal highlighted the strategic importance of renewable energy investments for the company. He noted that the project enhances energy reliability for steel manufacturing while supporting decarbonisation goals.
Completed in approximately 18 months, the project is among the fastest of its scale to be delivered in India. It includes 1.5 million solar panels and 91 wind turbines, collectively generating 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year—enough to power nearly 10 million households. The solar facility spans 2,400 acres, while the wind installation covers 700 acres.
This venture is part of a broader portfolio of renewable energy projects ArcelorMittal is advancing in India, Brazil, and Argentina, totaling 2.3 gigawatts in capacity. The company expects its suite of strategic growth projects to yield an additional $1.9 billion in annual EBITDA by the end of 2027.
AM/NS India manufactures a range of green and specialized steel products designed to meet global standards and support a sustainable value chain. The company is recognized as one of the lowest carbon-intensive steel producers in India.
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India is a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, operating as an integrated flat carbon steel producer with an annual crude steel capacity of 9 million tonnes and a pellet production capacity of 20 million tonnes. The company produces a diverse range of flat steel products, including value-added steel, backed by advanced downstream facilities.
