Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has secured a five-year maintenance services contract worth €107 million for 250 WAG-12B electric locomotives through its joint venture with Indian Railways, Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL). The contract covers comprehensive maintenance operations at the MELPL Nagpur depot, reinforcing the long-term collaboration between Alstom and Indian Railways.

The agreement follows a previously executed four-year maintenance programme and reflects continued confidence in Alstom’s technical expertise and service performance. The Nagpur facility has emerged as a key maintenance hub for India’s high-powered freight locomotive fleet and is widely regarded as a model for operational efficiency and joint venture execution in the railway sector.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, said the renewed contract underscores the strength of the partnership and the reliability of the WAG-12B platform in supporting India’s freight transport ambitions.”This renewal is a strong endorsement of our commitment to Indian Railways and the success of our long-standing collaboration. The performance of the WAG-12B locomotives demonstrates the value of reliable, high-capacity freight solutions in advancing India’s logistics and sustainability objectives,” he said.

The WAG-12B locomotives, part of the 12,000 HP Prima T8 platform, are among the most powerful freight locomotives operating in India. Designed to haul loads of up to 6,000 tonnes at speeds of 120 km/h, they play a critical role in improving freight efficiency across the Dedicated Freight Corridors while supporting the country’s transition toward lower-carbon transportation.

Under the agreement, MELPL will oversee full maintenance of the 250 locomotives as well as upkeep of depot infrastructure at Nagpur. The contract also includes continued deployment of Alstom’s Prompt Response Teams (PRTs), which are positioned across strategic locations in India to ensure rapid fault resolution, reduce downtime and maximise fleet availability.

In addition, the programme strengthens Alstom’s commitment to local capability building through ongoing technical training and skill development initiatives at the depot, supporting the creation of a highly skilled railway maintenance workforce in India. The renewed contract further consolidates Alstom’s position as a key partner in India’s rail modernisation programme, particularly in the development and maintenance of advanced freight locomotives that support the country’s growing logistics demands and sustainability targets.
