Airbus has inaugurated a dedicated Customer Support Centre for commercial aircraft in Johannesburg, reinforcing its longstanding relationship with Africa’s aviation industry. This strategic expansion brings Airbus closer to its airline partners on the continent, providing direct access to services that help operators ensure the safety, efficiency, and reliability of their fleets. The centre will offer a wide range of support, including technical assistance, engineering expertise, performance monitoring, training programs, and on-site services for all Airbus commercial aircraft models—ranging from the A220 to the A350.
This new investment reflects Airbus’ long-term confidence in Africa’s aviation future. “The Johannesburg facility marks a new chapter in Airbus’ journey on the continent, reaffirming our commitment to empowering local customers, strengthening regional connectivity, and contributing to shared progress,” said Gabriel Semelas, President for the Middle East and Africa. With this development, Airbus continues building its regional footprint while enhancing its ability to respond quickly to the needs of African carriers.
Since delivering its first A300 to the region in 1976, Airbus has established a significant presence in Africa. Today, over 260 Airbus aircraft are operated by nearly 40 African airlines. Looking ahead, Airbus projects a growing demand for aviation talent in Africa over the next two decades, including 14,000 new pilots and 21,000 mechanics and engineers, driven by increased air travel across the region.
The Johannesburg launch aligns with other Airbus milestones in Africa, including 30 years of operations by Airbus Helicopters in Southern Africa. The Midrand facility offers a wide array of services such as maintenance, spare parts, and Africa’s first H125 virtual reality simulator for pilot training.
Airbus Defence and Space also plays a key role in the region, supporting governments with military aircraft, satellite services, and Earth observation capabilities. With over 180 African suppliers integrated into its global supply network, Airbus continues to fuel job creation, skill development, and industrial growth throughout the continent.
