ABB has been selected by bp operator of the Sangachal terminal in Azerbaijan, to support the facility’s transition to electric power and strengthen grid stability. The project is part of a five-year global framework agreement signed with bp in September 2024, aimed at modernizing one of the world’s largest oil and gas processing hubs, which spans over 688 hectares.
As part of the agreement, ABB will supply and integrate four custom-designed synchronous condensers, enabling the phase-out of existing gas turbines. This move supports Azerbaijan’s national push for cleaner energy and enhances the site’s connection to the country’s power grid. The inclusion of ABB’s Ability™ System 800xA® Distributed Control System will allow real-time monitoring and control, improving operational efficiency and reliability.
ABB’s tailored solution reduces the number of synchronous condensers required, optimizing the design while lowering overall costs. These systems play a critical role in providing inertia, short-circuit power, and reactive power to maintain grid stability—particularly vital as Azerbaijan expands its renewable energy mix. The country aims to generate 30% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050. Between 2022 and 2023, the share of renewable energy in the national grid rose from just over 6% to 8%.
ABB’s scope covers the full lifecycle of the project—from system studies and design to equipment installation and commissioning. The 24-month execution timeline began in February 2025. Located 55 kilometers south of Baku, the Sangachal terminal processes 1.2 million barrels of oil and 81 million standard cubic meters of gas daily.
Commenting on the development, Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB’s Energy Industries division, said, “We are proud to support bp in reducing the carbon footprint of the Sangachal terminal. ABB’s electrification and automation solutions are designed to make industrial operations leaner, more energy-efficient, and more resilient.”
With a global presence in more than 100 countries and a legacy spanning 140 years, ABB continues to enable industries to boost productivity while advancing sustainability. Through its Process Automation division and a workforce of around 20,000 specialists, ABB is helping to drive the transition to cleaner and more efficient industrial operations.
