Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) has won a major transmission project in Maharashtra to support the evacuation of renewable energy and enable the development of pumped storage capacity in the state. The project, titled “Network Expansion Scheme in Western Region to Cater to Pumped Storage Potential near Satara (up to 4500 MW) – Part A”, has an estimated capital expenditure of around ₹4,700 crore. AESL emerged as the lowest bidder in the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process.
The project will be implemented through the special purpose vehicle Satara Power Transmission Ltd. and is scheduled to be completed within 36 months. The transmission scheme is designed to support the evacuation of up to 4,500 MW of renewable and storage power and strengthen electricity transmission between southern and western regions of the country. It will also support the growing pumped storage ecosystem around Satara, Pune and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
As part of the project, AESL will establish a 765/400 kV substation at Satara and construct a 765 kV double-circuit transmission line between Kolhapur and Satara. The project will also include augmentation of the Kolhapur pooling station and other associated transmission infrastructure.
The development will add approximately 562 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 9,000 MVA of transformation capacity to AESL’s portfolio. Following the addition, AESL’s cumulative transmission network will increase to 29,739 circuit kilometres, while its transformation capacity will reach 1,43,425 MVA.
“Pumped storage projects are emerging as a critical enabler of India’s clean energy transition by providing the flexibility and reliability required to integrate large-scale renewable energy into the grid,” said Kandarp Patel, CEO, Adani Energy Solutions Limited. “The Satara transmission project will create a vital transmission backbone to support both renewable energy evacuation and energy storage deployment, strengthening power flows between Southern and Western India,” he added.
The project comes as India expands its renewable energy capacity and works towards its target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Transmission infrastructure will play a key role in connecting renewable energy generation centres with major industrial and urban demand centres. AESL is developing transmission networks designed to connect renewable energy resources, including solar, wind and pumped storage projects, with major load centres. The company is also expanding its presence in power distribution and smart metering.
AESL is part of the Adani portfolio and operates across power transmission, distribution, smart metering and cooling solutions. It is currently India’s largest private transmission company, with a cumulative network of 29,739 circuit kilometres and transformation capacity of 1,43,425 MVA. In its electricity distribution business, AESL serves approximately 13 million consumers across metropolitan Mumbai and the Mundra SEZ. The company is also expanding its smart metering operations and developing integrated energy solutions focused on reliable, affordable and sustainable power delivery.
