Two companies within the Adani Group, India’s largest private-sector infrastructure and energy conglomerate, have secured Letters of Award from the Government of Assam for two major energy initiatives that together represent an investment of approximately ₹63,000 crore in the state. Adani Power Limited plans to invest around ₹48,000 crore to develop a 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant, while Adani Green Energy Limited intends to allocate roughly ₹15,000 crore to build two pumped storage facilities totaling 2,700 MW. AGEL has also received approval for 500 MW of storage capacity, which will be delivered from these upcoming projects.

These investments reflect the Group’s commitment to accelerating economic and energy development in India’s Northeast, building on Chairman Gautam Adani’s announcement earlier this year to direct ₹50,000 crore toward the region’s progress. Speaking about the initiatives, Mr. Gautam Adani noted that the Northeast has become an indispensable part of India’s growth narrative and emphasized that the upcoming thermal and pumped storage projects mark the largest private investment ever made in the region. He highlighted their importance in strengthening long-term energy security, generating employment, and fostering industrial expansion. He added that the benefits of these projects will extend beyond Assam, contributing to broader regional development and supporting India’s energy transition.

Adani Power was declared the winning bidder for the thermal project after offering the lowest tariff of ₹6.30 per kWh in a competitive auction. The project will be developed on a Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate model with coal linkage already secured under the Government of India’s SHAKTI policy. During construction, the plant is expected to generate employment for 20,000 to 25,000 workers and sustain roughly 3,500 jobs once fully operational.

The plant will be commissioned in stages beginning December 2030. Designed to incorporate advanced environmental technologies, the facility will provide dependable, efficient power to support Assam’s growing residential and industrial demand. Approvals have been secured from the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission, and the Power Supply Agreement with APDCL is expected to be finalized soon. Adani Power is presently executing the country’s largest private-sector capital expenditure programme for baseload generation, operating 18.15 GW across multiple states and targeting a total capacity of nearly 42 GW by 2031–32.

Adani Green Energy was also selected as the lowest bidder for the 500 MW storage tender. Its pumped storage projects will introduce advanced solutions for grid balancing, peak-demand management and renewable energy integration, making them critical assets for Assam’s clean energy future. These systems will ensure a stable and reliable power supply while supporting the wider shift toward low-carbon energy sources.

Adani Power, part of the Adani portfolio, is the nation’s largest private thermal power producer with 18,110 MW of installed capacity across twelve coal-based plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu, along with a 40 MW solar project in Gujarat. With a skilled workforce across domains and a focus on technological advancement, the company aims to help India achieve power surplus status and make affordable, quality electricity widely accessible.

Adani Green Energy Limited is India’s largest renewable energy company and one of the leading clean energy operators globally, managing utility-scale solar, wind, hybrid and storage assets. Its current operating portfolio exceeds 16.7 GW across twelve states, and the company is targeting 50 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 in alignment with India’s decarbonization roadmap.

AGEL is leveraging innovation to reduce the Levelized Cost of Energy and accelerate mass adoption of affordable green power. It is also developing the world’s largest renewable energy installation—30 GW at Khavda, Gujarat—spanning more than 500 square kilometers. AGEL’s operating assets are certified water-positive, free of single-use plastics, and zero-waste-to-landfill, underscoring its commitment to sustainable development.
