ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation technologies, has become a member of the Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) Network, a national initiative established to promote the advancement and commercialization of mining technologies in Canada. MICA brings together stakeholders across disciplines to modernize mining operations, improve environmental performance, strengthen the mineral supply chain, and boost domestic and international sales for Canadian innovators.
The MICA Network is managed by the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI). Since its inception, MICA has supported over 250 projects, leveraging approximately CAD 115 million in combined federal, provincial, and industry-matched funding.
ABB’s membership in the MICA (Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator) Network enables it to collaborate with a diverse group of industry participants on pilot projects and joint funding proposals. This partnership fosters innovation and accelerates the development of clean, high-impact technologies that can transform the mining sector. Through this network, ABB contributes its expertise in electrification, automation, and digitalization to drive meaningful advancements in mining operations.
Key focus areas of this collaboration include increasing mine production capacity while reducing operational costs, lowering energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and implementing intelligent, autonomous mining systems. By addressing these critical challenges, ABB and its MICA partners aim to make mining more efficient, sustainable, and technologically advanced.
According to Chamirai Nyabeze, Director of the MICA Network, “ABB’s global expertise in automation and electrification, along with its sustainability objectives, is well-aligned with MICA’s mandate. The partnership is expected to accelerate the commercialization of technologies that will shape the future of mining, making operations more efficient and environmentally responsible.”
SachinJari, General Manager, Mining North America, ABB Process Industries, added, “ABB is committed to enabling mining companies to operate more safely, efficiently, and sustainably. Membership in MICA provides a valuable platform for driving innovation that meets the evolving needs of the sector.”
