ABB has launched the 500 X pH/ORP sensor, a new measurement solution developed for industrial environments where extreme operating conditions often limit the lifespan of conventional sensors. Designed for demanding processes involving high temperatures, aggressive chemicals and fluctuating pH levels, the new sensor offers improved durability along with integrated digital connectivity.

The 500 X sensor incorporates a proprietary design intended to resist both reference poisoning and fouling, two of the most common causes of failure in conventional pH and oxidation-reduction potential sensors. In many industrial processes, these issues can cause sensors to degrade within hours or days.

According to ABB, evaluation data from customer trials shows that the 500 X sensor achieved operational lifespans up to ten times longer than traditional sensors in applications involving extreme temperature conditions and highly variable pH levels. The improvement can significantly reduce maintenance requirements and sensor replacement frequency.

The sensor integrates with ABB’s EZLink™ digital platform, allowing it to connect directly with compatible transmitters for rapid installation and operation. Through the EZLink system, users can quickly link the sensor with transmitters and begin measurement without complex configuration procedures.

The recently introduced AWT424 transmitter further enhances the system’s functionality by providing users with access to measurement data, diagnostic information and maintenance records through mobile devices. Using the EZLink™ Connect App, operators can retrieve sensor details, software updates and operational insights through their smartphones.

Nik Siwek, Global Product Manager for Continuous Water Analysis at ABB’s Measurement & Analytics division, said the new sensor builds on decades of experience in pH and ORP measurement technology. He noted that ABB has been developing measurement solutions in this field for more than 70 years through its well-established TB product line.

According to Mr Siwek, the 500 X combines the durability associated with ABB’s earlier sensor designs with the benefits of digital connectivity. The robust construction allows the sensor to perform reliably in harsh industrial environments, while the digital interface simplifies installation and maintenance.

The 500 series, which includes the 500 X and the 500 PRO models, is designed for high-performance industrial and marine applications. These sensors incorporate durable electrodes capable of operating in environments characterized by high pressure, elevated temperatures and heavy fouling conditions.

ABB’s pH/ORP sensor portfolio also includes the 100 series, which serves as an entry-level product range suitable for general applications such as drinking water treatment, wastewater management, irrigation systems, aquaculture facilities and environmental monitoring. The 700 series provides specialized solutions for high-accuracy measurement requirements, including ultra-low conductivity applications.
