ABB has successfully completed the modernization of propulsion drive systems across nine LNG carriers owned by Cool Company Ltd (CoolCo), enhancing reliability and extending the operational lifespan of the vessels by more than a decade. The upgrade focused on vessels built in 2015 and equipped with ABB’s ACS6000 frequency converters.

Instead of replacing entire systems, ABB implemented a modular modernization approach, upgrading electronic and control components while retaining existing mechanical infrastructure. This minimized operational disruption and enabled the vessels to remain on schedule.

The modernization introduced ABB’s next-generation Universal Control Unit (UCU), delivering improved computational performance, enhanced diagnostics, and more efficient maintenance capabilities. This upgrade strengthens fleet performance while ensuring continued access to technical support and spare parts.

CoolCo operates a fleet of dual-fuel diesel-electric LNG carriers, designed for safe and efficient global transportation of liquefied natural gas. The propulsion systems include generators, transformers, medium-voltage switchboards, frequency converters, and propulsion motors, all integrated to deliver high reliability and operational efficiency.

By extending the lifecycle of existing equipment, the modernization reduces the need for new raw materials and preserves the embedded carbon within the original systems. This approach aligns with broader industry efforts to adopt circular practices and reduce environmental impact.

The upgrade work was carried out at a shipyard in China and coordinated alongside scheduled maintenance activities to reduce downtime. ABB also implemented preventive maintenance measures during the process, enabling extended warranties of up to 24 months on the upgraded systems.

The project reflects a growing industry focus on lifecycle management as a means to improve sustainability and cost efficiency. By combining advanced technology upgrades with existing infrastructure, companies can enhance performance while minimizing waste and emissions.

ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation, continues to support industries in improving productivity and sustainability. With over a century of engineering expertise, the company remains committed to delivering solutions that enable efficient and reliable operations across global industries.
