OPAL Fuels Inc (Nasdaq: OPAL) has announced the signing of a master agreement to monetize approximately $100 million in Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Tax Credits over the coming years. The company expects the first transaction under this agreement to close within the current quarter.
The agreement establishes a structured framework to unlock value from tax credits generated through OPAL Fuels’ renewable energy operations. It marks a key step in strengthening the company’s integrated business model, which focuses on the production, distribution and utilization of renewable natural gas (RNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) as alternatives to conventional diesel fuel.
Section 45Z of the US tax code, known as the Clean Fuel Production Credit, was introduced to encourage the production and use of low-carbon transportation fuels. Continued bipartisan backing for the program has contributed to greater policy clarity and long-term confidence across the renewable fuels sector, supporting sustained investment and project development.
Company leadership stated that the agreement is expected to enhance financial flexibility while supporting expansion plans. Proceeds generated through the monetization of these credits are intended to strengthen corporate liquidity and fund future investments in new RNG production facilities as well as fueling infrastructure. These initiatives are aimed at accelerating the adoption of alternative fuels, particularly in heavy-duty transportation and other sectors where reducing emissions remains a challenge.
OPAL Fuels’ platform is designed to capture biogas from sources such as landfills and agricultural operations and convert it into low-carbon energy solutions. By enabling fleet operators to transition from diesel to RNG and CNG, the company seeks to deliver cost efficiencies, improved price stability and measurable environmental benefits.
The company highlighted that renewable natural gas represents one of the most scalable solutions currently available for reducing emissions in transportation, especially in segments that are difficult to electrify. Increased deployment of RNG and CNG infrastructure is expected to play a crucial role in advancing decarbonisation goals while maintaining operational reliability for fleet operators.
OPAL Fuels continues to expand its presence in the renewable energy market through investments in production capacity and distribution networks. The company remains focused on supporting the transition to cleaner fuels by leveraging its expertise in biogas capture and conversion technologies.
