Waygate Technologies, a Baker Hughes business, and GE Aerospace have introduced a new generation of automated Menu Directed Inspection (MDI) templates designed to enhance borescope inspections for GEnx-1B and GEnx-2B engines. The development marks a significant step toward improving standardisation and automation in aircraft engine maintenance.
The new templates have been developed under a Joint Technology Development Agreement between the two companies that began in 2023. They are being integrated into Waygate Technologies’ Mentor Visual iQ+ video borescope, building on earlier advancements in AI-assisted inspection capabilities.
The solution is designed to improve inspection quality and efficiency through guided workflows and intelligent assistance. By ensuring consistent image capture and structured inspection processes, the system helps reduce variability between operators while improving accuracy in assessing critical engine components.
Michael Domke, General Manager – Visual at Waygate Technologies, stated that the introduction of MDI templates brings a more standardised approach to inspections and represents a step forward in digital maintenance practices. He noted that the collaboration combines deep industry expertise with automation and artificial intelligence to support the evolving needs of the aviation sector.
Nicole Jenkins, Chief MRO Engineer at GE Aerospace, highlighted that the integration of automation and AI enables greater consistency and efficiency in inspections. She added that these tools support maintenance teams by improving productivity while maintaining high standards of safety and quality.
The MDI templates are specifically designed to guide inspectors in capturing recommended views of high-pressure turbine blades, aligning with aircraft maintenance manual requirements. Features such as image overlays and reference visuals displayed directly on the borescope screen help ensure uniform inspection outcomes. The system also incorporates both automated and manual 3D measurement capabilities, including line, area, depth, and profile analysis.
In addition to improving inspection accuracy, the solution enhances data management through automated labelling of images and videos, enabling better traceability. Integration with the InspectionWorks Insight cloud platform allows real-time data storage, seamless collaboration, and improved fleet-level insights. The templates also support workforce development by simplifying inspection procedures and reducing the learning curve for new technicians, addressing skill gaps in the maintenance sector.
This initiative reflects a broader effort by both companies to advance automation in engine maintenance. By leveraging digital tools and intelligent systems, the collaboration aims to deliver improved reliability, efficiency, and operational performance across the aviation industry.
