TraPac has awarded a major contract to ABB and Kuenz for the supply of new rail-mounted stacking cranes and the modernization of existing equipment at its Los Angeles terminal. The project forms part of a broader expansion aimed at increasing capacity while enhancing operational efficiency across the facility.

Under the agreement, Kuenz will deliver nine new rail-mounted stacking cranes, while ABB will be responsible for the design, installation, and commissioning of electrical and control systems for the new equipment. In parallel, ABB will upgrade the systems of 29 existing stacking cranes along with three rail-mounted gantry cranes used for intermodal operations, enabling improved performance and reliability across the terminal.

The initiative is driven by rising demand for container handling services and the need for a unified operational framework. By standardizing systems across both new and existing cranes, TraPac aims to ensure consistent performance, simplified maintenance, and improved coordination across its equipment fleet. ABB’s technology, designed to integrate with equipment from multiple manufacturers, will support seamless interoperability and long-term scalability.

Cameron Thorpe, President and Chief Executive Officer of TraPac, said the selection of ABB and Kuenz reflects their proven expertise in delivering high-performance crane solutions and advanced control systems. He noted that the new cranes will support growing volumes, while the upgrades will extend the life of existing assets and maintain consistent operational standards.

David Moosbrugger, Managing Director of Kuenz, stated that the project highlights the company’s ability to deliver reliable and efficient crane systems for global port operators, supported by a focus on quality engineering and technical innovation.

Clara Holmgren, Global Business Line Manager for Ports at ABB, emphasized that integrating control systems across the fleet will enable TraPac to operate as a unified system while creating a foundation for future upgrades and digital enhancements.

With more than a century of engineering expertise, ABB continues to support industrial customers worldwide through electrification, automation, and digital technologies. Its solutions are designed to improve productivity, efficiency, and sustainability across sectors including ports, logistics, and maritime operations.
