Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited (SMEL), one of India’s leading integrated metal producers, has announced the successful commissioning of Phase II of its Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) facility for colour-coated sheets at its Jamuria plant in West Bengal. The facility, operated through its wholly owned subsidiary, Shyam Sel and Power Limited (SSPL), commenced commercial production on April 16, 2026.
The Phase II expansion includes a state-of-the-art Dual Pot GI-cum-Galvalume (GL) line with a production capacity of 0.15 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This addition significantly enhances the company’s technical capabilities and product offerings, enabling it to cater to high-precision and performance-driven applications across multiple sectors. With this development, the total installed capacity of the CRM facility has increased to 0.40 MTPA, including the existing 0.25 MTPA from Phase I.
This strategic expansion positions Shyam Metalics to enter and serve the rapidly growing solar energy sector, particularly in the production of mounting structures for solar panels—an area that has historically relied heavily on imports. By addressing this gap, the company reinforces its commitment to supporting India’s self-reliance and domestic manufacturing ambitions.
The project is also aligned with the Government of India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme – PLI 2, underscoring the company’s focus on contributing to national initiatives aimed at strengthening advanced manufacturing and reducing import dependence. Beyond renewable energy, the expanded facility will cater to high-growth sectors such as automotive and consumer durables, where demand for premium, precision-engineered steel continues to rise.
The Jamuria facility’s strategic location in eastern India offers logistical advantages, enabling efficient supply to key markets while addressing regional demand-supply gaps in value-added flat steel products. This expansion strengthens Shyam Metalics’ downstream capabilities and reinforces its position as a key player in India’s steel value chain.
Commenting on the development, Brij Bhushan Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited, said, “The commissioning of Phase II of our flat products project marks a significant step in strengthening our value-added portfolio and improving realizations. This expansion enhances our ability to serve high-growth, high-margin segments such as solar, automotive, and consumer durables.
“We expect this phase to support a stronger product mix, drive margin expansion, and contribute meaningfully to incremental EBITDA over the medium term. Our inclusion under the Government’s PLI Scheme further improves the project’s return profile. We remain focused on disciplined capital allocation and anticipate optimal ramp-up over the next 10–12 months.”
