Fincantieri has marked a major milestone in naval defence innovation with the keel-laying of the first U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) at its historic Muggiano shipyard. The ceremony signals the formal start of construction for the next-generation submarine, part of a broader programme involving four vessels for the Italian Navy.
The initiative is managed by OCCAR, which oversees multinational defence programmes across Europe. Delivery of the first submarine is scheduled for 2029, representing a significant step forward in Italy’s underwater defence capabilities.
The U212NFS class is an advanced evolution of the existing U212A submarines, incorporating enhanced design maturity and a higher proportion of domestically developed technologies. The programme reflects a strong focus on strengthening national industrial capabilities while advancing cutting-edge naval engineering.
Among the key innovations introduced in the U212NFS are a lithium-ion propulsion battery system and a newly developed combat system. These advancements are designed to improve operational performance, offering greater stealth, extended endurance, enhanced energy efficiency, and increased cyber resilience. The integration of these technologies is expected to significantly enhance mission effectiveness in modern maritime environments.
Fincantieri emphasized that the programme plays a vital role in preserving and expanding Italy’s industrial expertise in submarine construction. By increasing the domestic development of critical components, the initiative supports the broader national supply chain and reinforces Italy’s position in advanced defence manufacturing.
The Muggiano shipyard, which has been operational for more than a century, remains a cornerstone of Italy’s naval construction capabilities. Having built over 100 submarines, the facility continues to serve as a strategic hub for innovation and production within the country’s underwater defence sector.
The U212NFS programme not only strengthens Italy’s naval capabilities but also underscores the importance of technological sovereignty in defence. By investing in advanced systems and local expertise, Fincantieri and its partners are ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness in the global defence landscape. This milestone highlights Fincantieri’s continued leadership in submarine design and construction, as well as its commitment to delivering high-performance, future-ready solutions for national and international defence requirements.
