Millcon Steel PCL, Thailand’s leading integrated steel manufacturer and distributor, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Meranti Green Steel, a Singapore-based green steel enterprise, to accelerate the development of low-carbon steel production and promote Green Steel initiatives in Thailand. The agreement establishes a strategic collaboration aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the steelmaking process while advancing sustainable production methods. Both organizations will work together to implement practical solutions that support the transition toward environmentally responsible steel manufacturing.
Speaking at the event, Nakorn Tangavirapat, Director of the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization), emphasized the importance of the initiative. He noted that the steel industry plays a crucial role in national development and expressed strong support for efforts to bring Green Steel production to reality in Thailand.
The partnership will focus on developing strategies to decarbonize steel production while maintaining industrial competitiveness. In addition to technological collaboration, the initiative seeks to engage key stakeholders, including government agencies, industry associations, and related businesses. Together, they aim to establish standards, guidelines, and support mechanisms aligned with global environmental and trade requirements.
Pravit Horungruang, Chief Executive Officer of Millcon Steel PCL, described the agreement as a major milestone for the company and the broader Thai steel industry. He highlighted that transitioning to low-carbon production is essential for aligning with global trends and meeting Thailand’s greenhouse gas reduction targets, while also enhancing long-term competitiveness.
Kasem Ratanasonti, Director of Meranti Green Steel (Thailand) Co, Ltd, emphasized the importance of collaboration across the steel value chain. He noted that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to reducing emissions through practical and scalable solutions. He also pointed to Thailand’s potential to become a regional leader in low-carbon steel production, supported by future green iron production initiatives in Duqm, Oman.
