Axelspace Corporation has secured a contract linked to the Japan Ministry of Defense’s satellite constellation initiative, reinforcing its role in the country’s space-based intelligence capabilities. The agreement, signed with Tri-Sat Constellation Co, Ltd and Mitsui Bussan Aerospace Co, Ltd covers the provision of optical satellite imagery data for the programme.

Tri-Sat Constellation Co, Ltd is a special purpose company established by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, and Mitsui & Co, Ltd.. The broader project was awarded to a consortium comprising Mitsubishi Electric, SKY Perfect JSAT, Mitsui & Co, Synspective Inc, Institute for Q-shu Pioneers of Space, Inc, Mitsui Bussan Aerospace, and Axelspace. On February 19, Tri-Sat Constellation Co, Ltd formalized the project agreement with Japan’s Ministry of Defense.

The initiative is being implemented under a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) framework and is designed to establish a satellite constellation operated by private-sector entities. The objective is to secure consistent access to imagery intelligence required to strengthen Japan’s stand-off defense capabilities — defined as the ability to respond effectively to potential threats from positions beyond direct attack range.

Within the consortium, Axelspace will serve as the exclusive provider of optical imagery. Leveraging its expertise in microsatellite development and mission operations, the company willsupply high-quality image data to support national security requirements. Axelspace has built a track record in designing, manufacturing, and managing small satellites, along with delivering reliable Earth observation data for both government and commercial customers.

Yuya Nakamura, President and CEO of Axelspace Corporation, stated that the newly concluded agreement positions the company to contribute meaningfully to Japan’s security infrastructure. He noted that Axelspace will draw upon its accumulated satellite engineering capabilities and stable data delivery experience to meet the stringent demands of defense-related applications. At the same time, he emphasized that the company remains committed to expanding the use of satellite-derived data across commercial industries and high-growth emerging markets.

Axelspace continues to advance its mission of making space more accessible through practical microsatellite solutions. Participation in the Ministry of Defense constellation project marks a significant milestone, underscoring the growing importance of private-sector innovation in supporting national space and security strategies.
