SMS group marked a major milestone in its global growth journey with the inauguration of a new manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on January 21, 2026. The new site underscores the company’s strategic focus on India, one of the fastest-growing and most demanding steel markets worldwide, and responds directly to rising customer requirements for speed, scale and execution reliability.

The Sanand facility strengthens SMS group’s global manufacturing network, with around 160 SMS employees and up to 400 contractors supporting production activities. The plant is equipped to manufacture machines and equipment for flat and long product processing, as well as forging technology, further expanding SMS’s industrial capabilities in the region.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by more than 250 guests from government, industry and business. Representatives from SMS group’s German leadership team, together with regional dignitaries, formally opened the facility by cutting the ceremonial ribbon and lighting a traditional Indian lamp, symbolising the start of operations.

Spread across approximately 80,000 square metres, the Sanand site is SMS group’s second manufacturing facility in India. It complements the company’s Bhubaneswar plant in Odisha, which has been operational since 2014. While Bhubaneswar remains focused on machinery, metallurgical equipment and services, the Sanand facility is designed to manufacture components weighing up to 125 tonnes and to assemble complete production lines. Together, the two sites create an integrated manufacturing ecosystem that enhances efficiency and broadens SMS group’s product portfolio.

With this investment, SMS group is reinforcing its proximity to customers and supporting the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative by strengthening local manufacturing and supply chains. India’s steel production, currently estimated at around 150 million tonnes per year, is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, and SMS aims to play a key role in enabling this expansion through advanced technology and dependable project execution.

Sanand was selected for its strong industrial base in western India, availability of developed industrial infrastructure, reliable power and water supply, and access to a skilled workforce. Its close proximity to major customers allows SMS to respond quickly to project-specific requirements while efficiently supplying components to international markets. The new facility has been planned with future growth in mind, with additional investments in modern equipment and skilled manpower envisaged as demand increases.

SMS group has a long-standing presence in India, dating back to 1989 through its predecessor companies. Over the decades, the company has steadily expanded its footprint and today operates from Gurgaon, Kolkata, Pune, Bhubaneswar and Sanand, employing around 1,700 professionals nationwide. Headquartered in Gurgaon, SMS India supports customers across the full spectrum of metallurgical plant engineering, from raw material processing to advanced steelmaking, finishing and forging technologies, for both new installations and modernization projects.
