The Government of Chhattisgarh and GAIL (India) Limited have entered into a partnership to explore the development of a greenfield gas-based fertiliser plant in the state. A non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
The MoU was executed by Rajat Kumar, Secretary (Commerce & Industries), Government of Chhattisgarh, and Rajeev Kumar Singhal, Director (Business Development), GAIL (India) Limited. Under the agreement, GAIL will carry out detailed techno-economic feasibility studies for setting up a urea manufacturing facility with a proposed capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes per annum.
The proposed plant is planned along GAIL’s Mumbai–Nagpur–Jharsuguda Natural Gas Pipeline (MNJPL) corridor, enabling assured access to natural gas supply. Based on the outcomes of the feasibility assessment, GAIL will take a final investment decision on project implementation.
The Government of Chhattisgarh has committed to providing facilitation support throughout the project lifecycle. This includes assistance with feasibility studies, identification and allocation of suitable land, coordination with state and central agencies, support for statutory approvals, and development of enabling infrastructure required for execution.
GAIL (India) Limited is a Maharatna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the country’s leading natural gas transmission and distribution company. GAIL has played a key role in developing downstream gas-based industries and now aims to strengthen domestic fertiliser production through strategic investments. The Government of Chhattisgarh is actively promoting industrial development through investor-friendly policies, infrastructure expansion, and initiatives focused on ease of doing business, positioning the state as a growing destination for industrial and manufacturing investments.
