Sagar Defence Engineering has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in Pune dedicated to producing Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs), marking a significant advancement in its collaboration with Liquid Robotics, a Boeing subsidiary. The plant represents a major milestone in the partnership announced earlier this year to jointly develop and manufacture advanced maritime systems. According to the official announcement, the facility reinforces the commitment of both companies to bolstering India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The USVs produced at the site will support the expansion of the Wave Glider platform—an autonomous, long-endurance maritime system designed and built by Liquid Robotics. Powered only by wave and solar energy, the Wave Glider can operate continuously for months while delivering real-time data and communication capabilities across a range of defence and ocean-monitoring missions.
The joint initiative enables manufacturing, testing and long-term sustainment of unmanned maritime platforms within India, combining global expertise with local innovation to strengthen defence capability and contribute to the growing ecosystem of maritime autonomy. The collaboration is aligned with the US-India Major Defence Partnership framework, with a focus on improving undersea surveillance, boosting co-production and increasing industrial capability across the Indo-Pacific region.
“This facility is a proud moment not only for Sagar Defence but for India’s broader defence manufacturing landscape,” said Cap. Nikunj Parashar, Founder of Sagar Defence Engineering. “Through this partnership and local production, we are advancing next-generation maritime technologies under the Make in India vision.”
Salil Gupte, President of Boeing India and South Asia, stated that the new plant demonstrates tangible progress in defence collaboration between India and the United States, while further strengthening the industrial base required for advanced maritime capability. Shane Goodenough, CEO of Liquid Robotics, described the launch of the plant as a pivotal step in the partnership, adding that localized manufacturing and sustainment of the Wave Glider will accelerate deployment timelines and improve operational readiness for maritime missions.
