ABB will supply 1,500 NINVA™ non-invasive temperature sensors, certified for marine applications, to eMarine, a Swedish company focused on enhancing efficiency and sustainability in the maritime industry. This partnership marks the debut of ABB’s NINVA technology in the global marine sector, complementing eMarine’s advanced energy management solutions already implemented on major cruise and cargo vessels around the world.
The NINVA sensors will gather crucial data to optimize heat recovery, as well as the management of cooling water and ventilation systems onboard vessels. These insights will contribute to reducing fuel consumption, improving energy efficiency, and lowering CO₂ emissions. Designed to withstand harsh marine environments with vibration resistance up to 4g, the sensors deliver the same accuracy as traditional invasive thermowells—without requiring pipe wall perforation.
“At eMarine, our goal is to offer innovative, high-quality solutions that help our customers achieve significant and sustainable energy savings,” said Ola Persson, CEO of eMarine. “Partnering with ABB and incorporating NINVA into our offerings allows us to provide smarter tools that support the maritime industry’s path to decarbonization.”
“ABB has long provided safer and simpler temperature measurement solutions for industries like chemicals, oil and gas, and others,” said Dr Guruprasad Sosale from ABB’s Measurement & Analytics division. “This is the first time we are introducing the benefits of NINVA to the marine sector, helping to advance decarbonization efforts globally.”
ABB’s non-invasive temperature sensing technology offers a simplified alternative to traditional thermowells. By using a clamp-on design, it eliminates the need to perforate piping, reducing the risk of leaks. The technology estimates process temperature from the pipe’s surface temperature, providing measurement accuracy and reliability comparable to invasive methods.
