India is making significant progress toward its 2070 Net Zero target, with new partnerships and projects reinforcing its energy transition. In a major step, NTPC—India’s largest power producer—has signed an agreement with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) to shape its long-term move toward cleaner energy systems.

Under this partnership, SEforALL will help NTPC create a detailed roadmap for its energy transition. The plan will align with India’s priorities around energy security, sustainable development, and climate goals. It will assess different scenarios across short-, medium-, and long-term timelines, highlighting investment requirements, diversification strategies, and the economic and social benefits of adopting cleaner technologies. NTPC is already leading several efforts on the ground, including pilot projects in green hydrogen, floating solar installations, battery storage systems, pumped hydro storage, and carbon capture solutions.

Founded in 1975, NTPC has played a central role in powering India’s industrial and urban growth. In 2021, it became the first major Indian utility to commit to a UN Energy Compact, setting a goal of adding 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. While thermal power still forms the core of its current generation capacity, NTPC has significantly ramped up its renewable energy portfolio, becoming a key player in supporting the nation’s electricity needs—accounting for nearly 25% of total generation.

“Our goal is to support sustainable economic growth through a balanced energy strategy that ensures security, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility. This partnership will help us meet rising demand while staying on course with our clean energy vision,” said Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC.

“India continues to demonstrate strong climate action by moving from pledges to implementation. This collaboration will help shape a net zero roadmap for NTPC—one of the country’s most important energy institutions. We commend NTPC’s commitment to cleaner power,” said Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for All.

NTPC Ltd is the country’s largest integrated power utility, supplying around a quarter of India’s electricity. The company has an installed capacity exceeding 80 GW and is building an additional 32 GW, including 13 GW from renewable sources. With operations spanning coal, gas, hydro, wind, and solar, NTPC is focused on delivering dependable and cleaner energy, while driving innovation and adopting new technologies to support a more sustainable future.
