At 1:37 p.m. EDT, the eighth GPS III satellite, developed by Lockheed Martin, was successfully launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The satellite, designated GPS III SV08, established signal acquisition shortly after reaching orbit.
Following the model of the previous satellite launched in December 2024, SV08 completed an accelerated deployment cycle. It was transported from Lockheed Martin’s cleanroom in Colorado and prepared for launch in Florida in just over three months—significantly faster than traditional timelines.
These GPS III satellites provide precise positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services for both civilian and military users. Their enhanced security and anti-jamming features are particularly important for defense operations, ensuring uninterrupted navigation support even in contested environments.
SV08 is currently undergoing operational testing and monitoring at Lockheed Martin’s Launch and Checkout Operations Center in Denver. Once certified, it will be integrated into the global GPS satellite constellation.
Lockheed Martin also leads the modernization and management of the GPS ground segment through the Architecture Evolution Plan. This system oversees the control and health of the 31 active GPS satellites, maintaining global PNT capabilities. The ground infrastructure includes a global network of monitoring stations, master control centers, and communication antennas.
Recent upgrades include the integration of M-Code Early Use, enabling secure, military-grade GPS signals for U.S. and allied forces. With SV08, eight GPS III satellites now support M-Code, reinforcing military readiness with improved navigation precision and resilience.
Lockheed Martin continues to expand the constellation with additional GPS IIIF satellites under a newly awarded contract modification. The company plays a central role in advancing the performance, reliability, and strategic value of the GPS system. Lockheed Martin is a global leader in defense technology, focused on developing advanced solutions across all domains to support security and innovation.
