NxtCell India has partnered with Padget Electronics, a subsidiary of Dixon Technologies, to begin local production of smartphones under the French Tech brand, Alcatel, according to a senior company official on Saturday. Atul Vivek, Chief Business Officer of NxtCell India, shared with reporters that the company has established a production capacity of 1.2 million smartphones per year.
“We’ve joined forces with Dixon Technologies’ Padget Electronics to manufacture a variety of devices under the Alcatel brand. Our initial focus is on producing 1.2 million smartphones annually, with plans to gradually expand to other devices in the portfolio,” Vivek stated.
The company aims to start rolling out Alcatel smartphones made in India within the next 8-10 weeks. NxtCell India has made an initial investment of USD 30 million (around Rs 260 crore) to bring the Alcatel brand back to the Indian market after a seven-year hiatus.
The company sees significant potential in the Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 price range and will introduce smartphones in this segment that feature a stylus, a feature typically found in phones priced over Rs 80,000. Alcatel has also partnered with Flipkart to offer its smartphones online.
Ansh Rathi, Chief Operating Officer of NxtCell India, mentioned that 500 people will be employed at the Padget Electronics assembly plant, with 200 workers dedicated specifically to producing Alcatel devices. “Our team has ensured a smooth technology transfer, integrating advanced manufacturing practices here in India, underscoring our dedication to the ‘Make in India’ initiative,” Rathi added.
NxtCell India, a fully Indian-owned enterprise, holds exclusive rights to represent and operate the Alcatel brand across India and select global markets. Based in Gurgaon, the company has committed $30 million to reintroduce Alcatel smartphones in India, marking the brand’s return after a seven-year absence. As part of its localization strategy, NxtCell has partnered with Padget Electronics, a manufacturing unit of Dixon Technologies, to produce Alcatel devices within the country.
