An agreement for the Design and Development of a 6MW Medium Speed Marine Diesel Engine under the Make-I category has been signed between the Indian Navy and Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited. The signing ceremony took place at South Block, New Delhi, on April 2, 2025, with Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary (Defence Production), and Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, in attendance.
The project, valued at ₹270 crore, will see the creation of a prototype diesel engine with more than 50% indigenous content. The Indian government will provide 70% of the funding for this initiative. The order also includes the development of detailed designs for a 3-10MW diesel engine. These engines are intended for use in both Main Propulsion and Power Generationaboard vessels of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard.
Historically, India has relied on foreign manufacturers for high-capacity diesel engines, but this project marks a significant step toward achieving self-reliance in marine engine production. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to indigenise critical defence technologies and promote Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in the sector.
