INOX Air Products, the country’s largest producer of industrial, medical, and electronic gases, has successfully commissioned its first green hydrogen manufacturing plant. Located at Asahi India Glass Limited’s (AIS) new greenfield float glass facility in Soniyana, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, this project marks a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices in India.

In partnership with AIS, India’s leading glass manufacturer, INOX will supply green hydrogen under a 20-year agreement. This collaboration is poised to transform the float glass production process by integrating green hydrogen, which will be produced using solar energy and an electrolysis process.

The newly established plant is designed to produce up to 190 tons of green hydrogen annually. In the initial phase, 95 tons per year will be supplied to the AIS facility, which will use it in its float glass manufacturing process—making this India’s first-ever instance of using green hydrogen in glass production.

“By harnessing solar power to generate green hydrogen, we are pioneering a sustainable approach to glass manufacturing,” INOX Air Products said in a statement. “This initiative is a major step in reducing the carbon footprint of industrial processes and will drive the adoption of green hydrogen in India’s manufacturing sector.”

The project is powered by a solar power plant that supplies renewable energy for the production of green hydrogen, marking a significant commitment to sustainability. As part of the arrangement, AIS has invested in the solar power infrastructure at its Soniyana facility.

Siddharth Jain, Managing Director of INOX Air Products, emphasized the environmental impact, stating, “Our green hydrogen supply will reduce CO2 emissions at AIS’ facility by approximately 1,250 tons annually. This initiative is a crucial step in India’s shift towards a low-carbon economy.”

Rupinder Shelly, Chief Operating Officer of Architectural Glass at AIS, highlighted the company’s growing commitment to sustainability. “With the launch of INOXAP’s green hydrogen plant, we are strengthening our dedication to sustainable operations. Our goal is to meet 94% of the power needs of our Soniyana facility from green energy sources. We will continue to invest in sustainable technologies to support de-carbonization and circularity.”

The facility, which is located in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, is part of AIS’s greenfield project for manufacturing high-quality float glass. The project has been developed with the support of AGC Europe, which provided the technology for the facility. With this move, both INOX Air Products and AIS are setting new standards for sustainable manufacturing, aiming to drive a greener future for India’s industrial sector.
