Vedanta Aluminium, India’s leading producer of aluminium, has taken a significant step to enhance its logistics infrastructure by launching a new railway line. This development supports the expansion of its 5 MTPA alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, located in Odisha’s Kalahandi district.
The new rail infrastructure will streamline the transportation of raw materials and commodities, enhancing the efficiency of both inbound and outbound logistics. Additionally, this project aligns with Vedanta’s commitment to achieving Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050, with the new railway line expected to cut carbon emissions by 262 tonnes annually.
The newly introduced 13.4 km railway line marks a key achievement for Vedanta Lanjigarh, driving the company closer to its goal of 100% rail-based logistics. The addition of six new loop lines within the plant yard, paired with an upgraded electronic signaling system, will significantly improve the plant’s capacity, enabling it to handle up to 25 million tonnes of materials per year and manage 20 rakes daily with enhanced efficiency.
A major highlight of the project is the transition from manual to digital signaling, moving from Relay Room Interlocking (RRI) to Electronic Interlocking (EI). This upgrade brings cutting-edge digitization to the rail operations, improving safety, boosting efficiency, and extending the lifespan of the equipment.
Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer at Vedanta Aluminium, commented, “The launch of this 13.4 km railway line is a key milestone that will enhance logistics, reduce turnaround times, and support our long-term production objectives, all while demonstrating our commitment to digital innovation and safety.”
By integrating modern railway infrastructure with advanced digital solutions, Vedanta Aluminium sets a new standard in the aluminium industry. This expansion not only improves supply chain efficiency but also strengthens the company’s role in India’s industrial growth.
Vedanta Aluminium, part of Vedanta Limited, is the largest aluminium producer in India, manufacturing over half of the country’s aluminium (2.37 million tonnes in FY24).
