The European automotive supplier association, CLEPA, has honored ZF Friedrichshafen AG as a top innovator in the “Green” category for its groundbreaking electric motor technology that eliminates the need for rare earth metals. This magnet-free motor sets a new benchmark in electromobility by combining high performance with enhanced sustainability.

“This recognition highlights our commitment to developing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions for the future of electromobility,” said Dr. OtmarScharrer, Head of Engineering Electrified Powertrain Technology at ZF. “Our magnet-free electric motor not only offers maximum performance but also reduces dependency on rare earth metals, addressing critical environmental and supply chain challenges.”

Rare earth metals, commonly used in magnets and batteries, are associated with environmentally harmful extraction processes. ZF’s I²SM (In-Rotor Inductive-Excited Synchronous Machine) motor uses an inductively excited system, eliminating the need for these materials. This innovation conserves natural resources, reduces drag losses during high-speed travel, and enhances overall efficiency compared to traditional permanent magnet synchronous machines.

CLEPA’s annual awards celebrate transformative achievements in the automotive supply sector, particularly in digitalization and sustainability. ZF previously won the CLEPA Innovation Award for its autonomous shuttle (2022), eTrailer prototype (2020), and Evasive Maneuver Assist system (2017, jointly with WABCO).

The “Top Innovator” title for ZF’s motor was selected from around 80 global entries and presented on Dec. 4 at CLEPA’s 65th anniversary event at Autoworld in Brussels. The “Green” category specifically honors advancements promoting sustainable and climate-neutral mobility solutions.
