In celebration of igus 60th anniversary, the innovative igus®, made entirely from recycled plastic, has set off on a year-long world tour. The bright orange bicycle will journey through 16 countries, promoting the concept of a circular economy in plastics and showcasing a new approach to urban mobility that combines sustainability with ease of use. Designed to be rust-free and low-maintenance, the igus needs no lubrication, with key components like the ball bearings and freewheel made from high-performance plastics.
On Tuesday morning at the igus headquarters in Cologne, the tour officially kicked off in front of company staff and press members. Over the next 12 months, the bike will visit countries including Germany, Italy, the United States, and China, stopping at various customer locations and partner sites. The goal of the tour is to highlight how recycled plastics can serve as raw materials for innovative products like the igus, rather than being disposed of in landfills or incinerated.
A Step Towards a Circular Plastic Economy
“For 60 years, igus has been producing plastic components for industrial movement, and we are committed to advancing a sustainable circular economy,” said Frank Blase, CEO of igus. “With the igus, we aim to inspire both companies and consumers to adopt more sustainable practices when it comes to plastics.”
The bibyble represents a significant milestone in this mission. It features components made from up to 50% recycled plastic, a number that continues to rise. By using plastic waste such as discarded fishing nets and shampoo bottles, igus transforms these materials into valuable resources for its rotational moulding machines, paving the way for future eco-friendly innovations.
Durability and Easy Maintenance
Throughout the tour, spectators will have the chance to see firsthand how a plastic bicycle can offer a smooth, enjoyable ride while requiring minimal upkeep. Built almost entirely from plastic, the bicycle is resistant to the elements, making it weatherproof and rust-free. It can be easily cleaned with a simple hose-down and left outside without concern, whether on city streets or at campsites, festivals, or company locations.
The bike’s high-performance plastics ensure low-friction operation without the need for lubricants, which can attract dirt on traditional bicycles. This feature eliminates the hassle of regular maintenance and relubrication, while the material’s natural cushioning properties provide added comfort. The bike exemplifies the versatility and advantages of motion plastics, which will be demonstrated throughout its global journey.
