Thermax has announced a partnership with Ceres Power to produce large-scale Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOEC), a key technology for green hydrogen production. This collaboration will see Thermax utilize its expertise in heat integration and waste heat recovery to develop innovative pressurized stack array modules (SAM) and balance of module (SBM) components, essential for constructing multi-megawatt SOEC electrolyser systems.
Under the non-exclusive global license agreement, the company will manufacture, market, and service SAMs based on Ceres Power’s advanced SOEC technology. Additionally, the company will handle the development, commercialization, and sale of SBM and multi-megawatt SOEC electrolyser modules.
This partnership is set to accelerate the deployment of SOEC technology, offering up to 25% greater efficiency compared to traditional low-temperature electrolysis methods. The technology is particularly suited for decarbonizing challenging sectors such as ammonia/fertilizer production, steel manufacturing, refineries, and chemical industries by effectively utilizing steam from industrial processes and waste heat recovery.
The company plans to build a manufacturing facility for these electrolysers, develop the supply chain, and localize critical components. This positions Thermax among the few global providers of large-scale SOEC systems for commercial use.
Ashish Bhandari, Managing Director & CEO of Thermax, stated, “Our collaboration with Ceres Power aims to deliver a highly efficient and cost-effective hydrogen production solution, supporting the energy transition in India and globally. This partnership reflects our commitment to advancing sustainable solutions for industries that are difficult to decarbonize.”
Ceres Power CEO Phil Caldwell added, “This licensing agreement introduces Ceres to the burgeoning Indian market, which is becoming increasingly crucial for green hydrogen, steel, and ammonia. Our technology will enable Thermax to offer next-generation hydrogen solutions, driving demand for our manufacturing licensees.”
