Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Founder and CEO of Kinetic Green, has called for strong government measures to boost electric vehicle (EV) use from the current 6% to 30% by 2030. As the new Budget approaches, she emphasized the need for continued support to sustain the growth of the EV sector.
Motwani is looking forward to the announcement of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) 3 scheme, as the current one ends on July 31. She stressed the importance of having a clear plan for the next three to five years to keep investments and EV adoption on track. “We urgently need the FAME scheme to continue. This is crucial for maintaining investment momentum and promoting EV use,” Motwani said.
Charging Infrastructure
Motwani also highlighted the need for more charging stations in key areas of 10-15 major cities and highways. “Support for charging infrastructure will be essential for increasing the use of electric cars and commercial vehicles across India,” she added.
GST Reduction
The EV sector is also seeking a reduction of GST on lithium-ion batteries from 18% to 5% and on EV charging services to 5%. “These changes will make EVs more affordable and improve the ownership experience for customers,” Motwani said. Motwani believes that these measures will help achieve the government’s goal of 30% EV penetration by 2030 and create a sustainable EV ecosystem in India.
