IGBC’s E3 Event Drives Green Building Practices in Chennai

Chennai, known for its vibrant culture and dynamic urban landscape, took a significant stride towards sustainable development with the Indian Green Building Council‘s (IGBC) recent E3 Event. Grounded in the ancient wisdom of Panchabhuta, IGBC’s mission to promote sustainable practices resonated strongly at the event, which brought together industry pioneers, policymakers, and advocates.

In collaboration with the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI), IGBC’s initiative aimed to foster a greener, more sustainable future, aligning closely with CREDAI’s 25th-anniversary celebration. The event highlighted the critical role of green buildings in nurturing both humanity and the planet, emphasizing the holistic approach to sustainability beyond construction.

Industry luminaries, including Mr. G S Sameeran, IAS, Joint Commissioner (Works), Greater Chennai Corporation, and Mr. Sridharan Swaminathan, National VP, South Zone, CREDAI, shared insights on Chennai’s journey towards sustainability. Mr. Swaminathan underscored the transformative impact of green buildings, fostering an ecosystem of sustainability and creating job opportunities in allied industries like renewable energy and green technology.

Key discussions delved into optimizing space utilization, extending building lifespans, and embracing flexibility in design and functionality. Mr. Sameeran emphasized the importance of integrating sustainable practices into society-wide initiatives, emphasizing the positive impact of green buildings on communities and the environment.

The event also recognized exemplary commitment to green practices, with Mahindra World City receiving a Platinum Plaque under the IGBC Green Township Rating System. Urbanrise, a Founding Member of IGBC, was lauded for its dedication to sustainable development, showcasing the growing momentum of the green building movement.

Technical sessions explored critical themes such as addressing the Urban Heat Island Effect, sustainable architectural planning, low-carbon design materials, and energy-saving methodologies. These discussions underscored the importance of collaborative efforts and innovative solutions in driving sustainable development.
