Wabtec Corporation (NYSE: WAB) has secured orders worth approximately US$94 million (₹839 crore) from Indian Railways to supply braking systems, doors and gangways for the Vande Bharat Sleeper train programme. The orders cover onboard equipment and related integration, testing and commissioning support.

The supplies are intended to support the introduction of next-generation sleeper trains for long-distance overnight journeys. Wabtec said its systems would help improve train availability, simplify maintenance and strengthen passenger safety. The contracts include the delivery of critical onboard systems, integration support, testing and commissioning, along with support for long-term operational reliability. The work will be carried out in line with Indian Railways’ performance requirements and delivery schedules.

Pascal Schweitzer, President of Wabtec Transit, said the orders reflected the company’s role in the modernisation of Indian Railways. He said Wabtec would draw on its technology portfolio and local manufacturing capabilities to meet the requirements of the programme and deliver the systems on schedule.

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF), a major manufacturing unit of Indian Railways, will manufacture 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets under the programme. Each trainset will comprise 24 coaches and is designed for long-distance overnight services, extending the Vande Bharat platform beyond intercity day travel.

The sleeper train programme is part of Indian Railways’ wider effort to expand passenger capacity and improve long-distance travel. The trains are being developed to provide passenger comfort, safety and convenience while meeting operational requirements for regular intercity services.

The programme involves coordination among Indian Railways, ICF, equipment suppliers and other stakeholders. The integration of braking, door and gangway systems is an important part of preparing the trainsets for service, as these components contribute to safe train operation, passenger movement and overall fleet performance.

Wabtec said the orders strengthen its participation in India’s railway modernisation and its relationships with rail manufacturers, system integrators and national railway programmes. The company supplies equipment and services for freight and passenger rail applications, with its portfolio covering mechanical systems, digital technologies and maintenance support.

The contracts also add to Wabtec’s work in the Indian rail sector, where domestic manufacturing and system integration are important parts of railway procurement and development. The company will support the programme through the supply and commissioning of the contracted systems.
