Sandvik Coromant has expanded its CoroDrill Dura 462 range with a new series of solid carbide deep-hole drills designed for applications ranging from 12×D to 30×D. The expansion extends the product family’s capabilities beyond micro-hole and short-hole drilling, allowing manufacturers to use a common drill platform across a wider range of machining operations.

Manufacturers in general engineering, automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, and pump and valve industries are seeking to reduce production costs while maintaining component quality and process reliability. Simplifying tool selection, reducing inventory and improving machine utilisation have become important priorities, particularly in operations involving different materials and drilling depths.

The new CoroDrill Dura 462 deep-hole drills are designed for multi-material applications. They combine a robust geometry with X2BM grade, Zertivo 2.0 physical vapour deposition (PVD) coating and a micro-grained carbide substrate. The combination is intended to deliver consistent performance across a broad range of materials and machining conditions.

Deep-hole drilling can present challenges related to positional accuracy, thrust forces, tool stability and chip evacuation. To address these issues, the new drills feature an optimised flute design, offset double margins, double gashes, blended root radii and a 135-degree point angle. These design features help improve stability, manage cutting forces, maintain hole quality and extend tool life.

James Thorpe, Global Product Manager at Sandvik Coromant, said customers were looking for reliable machining processes and tools that could perform across different materials and conditions rather than solutions limited to a single application. Customer field trials comparing the new deep-hole drills with competing products recorded an average 45% increase in tool life and a 25% improvement in productivity. These results can help manufacturers lower the cost per hole while maintaining drilling consistency.

The expanded range is also intended to simplify tooling inventories. For applications deeper than 15×D, Sandvik Coromant recommends using a corresponding CoroDrill Dura 462 short-hole drill with a depth of 3×D or 5×D to create the pilot hole. This approach removes the need for separate dedicated pilot drills and helps standardise drilling operations within the same product family.

The drills have also been designed for reconditioning through multiple cycles while maintaining their original performance and cutting diameter. Reconditioning, combined with extended tool life, can help reduce tool consumption, operating costs and material waste.

Cory Carpenter, Global Product and Digital Application Specialist at Sandvik Coromant, said the expanded range allows manufacturers to handle micro-hole, short-hole and deep-hole applications using one drilling family, reducing tooling complexity and simplifying machining decisions. The new CoroDrill Dura 462 deep-hole drills are intended to help manufacturers improve productivity, manage tooling costs and maintain process reliability across a wide range of industrial applications.
