Godavari Biorefineries Limited (BSE: 544279 | NSE: GODAVARIB) has secured a patent from the China National Intellectual Property Administration for its invention titled “Use of Compounds for Treating Viral Infections”, expanding the company’s intellectual property portfolio in antiviral research. The patent covers compounds that inhibit Vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase), a cellular mechanism involved in processes used by certain viruses during infection. It also covers the use of these compounds in medicaments for treating viral infections.

The Chinese patent follows an earlier patent granted in Japan for the same invention. The additional patent protection expands the jurisdictions in which Godavari Biorefineries has secured rights for the antiviral compound class. The company said the patent forms part of its broader research programme in life sciences and its efforts to develop original molecules through research focused on potential applications in human health.

Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director, Godavari Biorefineries Limited, said, “This patent marks another step forward in our research into V-ATPase and its potential applications in addressing viral infections. Our focus is on exploring h ow these compounds can contribute to the development of solutions that address important challenges in human health.” He added that patent protection in China strengthens the company’s intellectual property in the area and supports its continued research into original molecules.

Antiviral drug development includes approaches that target mechanisms within host cells that are involved in viral infection, as well as approaches that act directly on viruses. V-ATPase is a cellular mechanism that can play a role in processes associated with certain viral infections.

The patent names Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, Dr Sandip Gavade, Dr Maithili Athavale and Dr Prashant Kharkhar as inventors. Dr Prashant S. Kharkar, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Dean, Students and Alumni Affairs, Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, has provided guidance to the research programme, particularly in the investigation of V-ATPase-inhibiting compounds and their potential applications in viral infections.

The patent adds to Godavari Biorefineries’ intellectual property in the antiviral compound class and forms part of the company’s expanding life sciences portfolio. The company has been pursuing research in areas beyond its traditional manufacturing operations, with life sciences forming part of its broader portfolio. The patent grant provides additional protection for its research related to V-ATPase inhibition and viral infection treatment.

Godavari Biorefineries has established an international presence by exporting bio-based chemicals to more than 45 countries. The company also maintains strong connections with global research and development networks, supporting its efforts to develop new technologies and sustainable products for international markets.
