Maruti Suzuki India Limited has commissioned a 300 kW Green Hydrogen (GH₂) electrolyser plant at its Manesar manufacturing facility in Haryana. The pilot project will use Green Hydrogen produced from solar energy as a process fuel in manufacturing operations.

The Green Hydrogen will be blended with natural gas for use in the company’s manufacturing processes. The pilot is designed to increase the utilisation of solar power generated at the Manesar facility, including electricity produced during holidays that would otherwise remain unused.

Under the system, surplus solar energy is used to produce Green Hydrogen, which is then stored and used as process fuel when required. Maruti Suzuki plans to use the experience gained from the pilot to assess the wider adoption of Green Hydrogen technology across its manufacturing facilities in Haryana and Gujarat.

Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the company was pursuing multiple renewable energy solutions for its manufacturing operations alongside its multi-pathway approach to vehicle technologies. “Just like we have adopted a multi-pathway approach for products, we have also embarked on a journey of multiple renewable energy solutions for manufacturing operations. The commissioning of our 300 kW Green Hydrogen plant is aligned with the Government of India’s Green Hydrogen Mission. This, along with expansion of solar, biogas and installation of battery energy storage system reflects our commitment to transition to cleaner and sustainable energy solutions,” he said.

Mr Takeuchi said manufacturing competitiveness would increasingly depend on factors including carbon intensity, alongside cost and quality. He added that Maruti Suzuki aims to reduce its manufacturing carbon footprint from the current 615,000 tonnes to 266,000 tonnes by FY2030-31.

The company is expanding its use of renewable and alternative energy sources across its manufacturing facilities. These include in-house solar power plants, renewable electricity procured through government sources and power purchase agreements for solar and wind power.

Maruti Suzuki is also setting up a 10 tonnes per day biogas plant at its Kharkhoda facility, which is scheduled for commissioning during FY2026-27. The company has also commissioned a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System at Kharkhoda and has started using compressed biogas as a process fuel.

The company’s board has approved four compressed biogas projects with a budget of ₹561 crore. Separately, Suzuki Motor Corporation, in partnership with the National Dairy Development Board and dairy industry unions, plans to establish 10 biogas plants across India. Three of these plants are already operational in Gujarat.

The Manesar Green Hydrogen project adds another clean energy source to Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing operations. The company said the pilot will provide operational experience for evaluating Green Hydrogen as part of its wider strategy to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions from manufacturing.
