Velan has supplied more than 1,000 valves for the hydrothermal cleanup unit (HCU) project at Preem’s Lysekil refinery in Sweden, supporting the refinery’s transition towards renewable fuel production. The project is part of Preem’s efforts to increase the production of renewable diesel, also known as HVO100, and sustainable aviation fuel using waste-based feedstocks. These include used cooking oil and animal fats, which require specialized treatment before they can be processed into renewable fuels.
Velan’s valve package was delivered through its distribution partner Alnab and covers a broad range of valve technologies and materials. The order includes gate, globe and check valves in pressure seal, small forged and cast steel configurations, together with wafer check valves and triple offset valves.
The valves supplied for the project are manufactured in materials selected for the operating requirements of the various process applications. These include carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex and nickel alloy grades. At the Lysekil refinery, Velan’s valves will be used in the HCU pretreatment process. The process applies water, heat, pressure and turbulent flow to remove impurities from renewable feedstocks before further processing. The valve package will also support steam, isolation and utility services across the facility.
The project represents another major order for Velan at the Lysekil site, where the company has supplied valve solutions for more than 25 years. Its established relationship with Preem and experience with the refinery were important factors in the selection for the latest project.
According to Velan, the project involved demanding delivery schedules and close customer oversight throughout the manufacturing and production process. The company worked with Preem and Alnab to meet the project’s technical and delivery requirements.
The supply of the valve package highlights the role of industrial equipment suppliers in supporting the development of renewable fuel infrastructure. As refiners and energy companies increase their use of waste-based feedstocks, reliable flow-control equipment is required across pretreatment, steam, utility and isolation systems.
The Lysekil project is expected to contribute to Preem’s broader shift from conventional fossil fuel production towards renewable alternatives. The HCU facility will enable the treatment of renewable feedstocks for use in the production of lower-carbon fuels, including renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. With more than 1,000 valves supplied for the project, Velan continues its long-standing involvement at the Lysekil refinery while supporting the transition towards renewable fuel production in Sweden.
