Vedanta Group has invested more than US$1 billion in net-zero transition initiatives over the past five years as it continues to increase the use of renewable energy across its operations. The company said renewable energy utilisation rose 52% year-on-year to 4 billion units in FY2025-26.

Vedanta currently has nearly 2,000 MW of renewable energy capacity installed and contracted and is targeting 2.5 GW of round-the-clock renewable energy capacity by 2030. The company is also working to reduce emissions through lower-carbon fuels, energy efficiency measures and technology-led improvements.

The Group said its decarbonisation initiatives helped avoid approximately 36 million tonnes of CO₂e emissions since FY2021. Greenhouse gas emissions intensity across its metals and mining production has declined by about 14% from the FY2020-21 baseline.

Vedanta’s energy transition strategy covers both its operations and the materials it supplies to the market. Its portfolio includes copper, aluminium, zinc, silver and steel, all of which are widely used in renewable power generation, transmission networks, electricity grids, solar systems, energy storage and other electrification applications.

India is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030 and has set a net-zero emissions goal for 2070. Vedanta said these targets are expected to drive sustained demand for metals and minerals required for clean energy infrastructure.

“The global transition to clean energy demands both sustainable materials and sustainable operations. Vedanta operates at the heart of this shift; producing the critical metals essential for a low-carbon future while aggressively decarbonizing our own footprint,” said Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-Executive Director, Vedanta Ltd and Chairperson, Hindustan Zinc Ltd.

The company is also developing lower-carbon products to support customers in reducing their emissions. Vedanta Aluminium’s Restora and Restora Ultra and Hindustan Zinc’s EcoZen are designed to meet demand for lower-carbon metals. During FY2025-26, customers using EcoZen avoided approximately 8,268 tonnes of CO₂e emissions. Vedanta is deploying artificial intelligence, automation, Industrial IoT and advanced analytics across its businesses to improve energy efficiency, optimise production processes and enhance asset performance.

The Group said its sustainability efforts are supported by the ESG performance of its businesses. Vedanta Limited, Vedanta Aluminium and Hindustan Zinc have featured among leading performers in S&P Global’s corporate sustainability assessments. Hindustan Zinc is also a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals.

Vedanta Oil & Gas has strengthened its methane emissions management and achieved OGMP 2.0 Gold Standard Pathway status for methane reporting and management. The company said its investments in renewable energy and cleaner production, together with its portfolio of critical materials, position Vedanta to support India’s growing clean energy and electrification requirements.
