Emerson has secured a multi-million-dollar contract from BP to provide integrated control and safety automation for the $2.9 billion Shah Deniz Compression project in the Caspian Sea, offshore Azerbaijan. The project involves the development of an electrically powered offshore production platform that will normally operate without personnel. The facility is being developed to access low-pressure gas reserves and improve recovery from the Shah Deniz field.

The new platform will feature four 11 MW compressors and serve as a central compression hub for gas produced from the Shah Deniz Alpha and Shah Deniz Bravo platforms. Operations will be remotely managed from BP’s Sangachal terminal, located around 55 kilometres south of Baku.

Under the contract, Emerson will supply its DeltaV Distributed Control System and DeltaV Safety Instrumented System. The systems will provide process control, emergency shutdown, fire and gas detection, and power management capabilities for the offshore facility.

Emerson will also provide cloud-based engineering services and digital twin technology to support virtual system testing, integration and operator training. These technologies are expected to help improve project preparation and provide operators with a connected environment for system development and training. The contract builds on the long-standing relationship between Emerson and BP. Emerson has previously served as the main automation contractor for major developments in the Shah Deniz field, including Azeri Central East and Shah Deniz Stage 2.

Ram Krishnan, Chief Operating Officer, Emerson, said the company has supported the Shah Deniz development as a main automation contractor for more than a decade. He said the latest project would extend the collaboration with BP and apply Emerson’s automation capabilities to support remote operations and higher production from the field.

The Shah Deniz Compression project is expected to contribute approximately 50 billion cubic metres of additional gas and around 25 million barrels of condensate production and exports.Construction of the project is scheduled for completion in 2029. First gas compression from the Shah Deniz Alpha platform is expected in 2029, followed by compression from the Shah Deniz Bravo platform in 2030.

The project is aimed at extending the production potential of the Shah Deniz field by enabling access to lower-pressure gas reserves. Emerson’s automation and safety systems will form an important part of the technology infrastructure required to operate the new offshore compression facility. The contract further strengthens Emerson’s position in offshore automation and its relationship with BP, while supporting the deployment of remote operating technologies in large-scale energy projects.
