Italian steel producer Feralpi Group has strengthened its climate strategy by setting a target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with a commitment to reduce Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions by 90% compared with 2022 levels. The long-term emissions reduction targets have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global organisation that evaluates and certifies corporate climate commitments based on climate science.

As part of the target, Feralpi Group will also work towards reducing remaining absolute Scope 3 emissions outside its core operations by 90% by 2050 from the 2022 baseline. These emissions include activities associated with the wider value chain, such as the procurement of goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, transportation and distribution, operational waste, processing of sold products and end-of-life treatment. The new commitment builds on Feralpi Group’s existing decarbonisation programme, which focuses on reducing emissions through technological upgrades, renewable energy adoption, resource efficiency and sustainable supply chain practices.

Key initiatives under the company’s decarbonisation roadmap include the electrification of industrial processes and the gradual replacement of methane-based energy consumption with electricity. The company is also increasing the use of renewable energy through a combination of self-generation and the purchase of guarantees of origin for electricity and biomethane.

Additional measures include improving energy efficiency, recovering waste heat from industrial processes, increasing the use of recycled raw materials with lower carbon intensity, and expanding the use of rail transportation to reduce emissions associated with logistics. Feralpi Group said the net-zero target reflects its continued focus on transforming steel production through innovation and sustainable manufacturing practices while supporting the broader transition towards a low-carbon industrial economy.

The company has been accelerating investments in sustainability and product development in recent years. In February 2025, Feralpi secured a €170 million sustainability-linked financing facility from a banking consortium comprising BNL BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole Italia, Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit. The financing is connected to the achievement of defined environmental sustainability objectives and supports the company’s long-term investment programme.

With the new climate targets, Feralpi Group aims to further advance its role in the European steel sector by combining production efficiency, circular economy principles and emissions reduction measures. The company’s roadmap is designed to support the transition towards cleaner steel manufacturing while maintaining competitiveness in global markets.

Feralpi Group is an Italian steel producer specializing in the manufacturing of steel products for construction and industrial applications. The company focuses on innovation, circular economy practices and sustainable production processes as part of its long-term development strategy.
