On the occasion of Global Energy Independence Day, Vedanta reaffirmed its commitment to unlocking India’s domestic hydrocarbon potential through accelerated exploration, advanced technology deployment and enhanced oil recovery initiatives. The company reiterated its ambition for Vedanta Oil & Gas to achieve production of 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), supporting India’s long-term vision of greater energy security and reduced import dependence.
India is among the world’s fastest-growing energy markets, yet the country continues to rely on imports for nearly 90% of its oil and gas requirements. This dependence exposes the economy to global supply disruptions and price fluctuations. With an estimated 300 billion barrels equivalent of hydrocarbon resources, India has significant untapped potential that can play a critical role in strengthening energy resilience, supporting industrial growth and creating employment opportunities.
Anil Agarwal, Chairman, Vedanta, said, “Energy independence is a strategic economic imperative for India. Every barrel of oil and gas produced within the country strengthens our economy, reduces import dependence and enhances national resilience. India has abundant natural resources, world-class technical talent and entrepreneurial capability. Nearly 10% of the world’s oil and gas professionals are Indians, and this talent, combined with our vast resource potential, gives us a unique opportunity to transform India’s energy future. If we unlock our hydrocarbon resources responsibly, energy independence can become a powerful driver of economic growth, employment and Viksit Bharat.”
Despite its resource potential, India remains significantly under-explored, with large areas across its sedimentary basins offering opportunities for further discovery and development. The expansion of exploration activities, particularly in deep and ultra-deepwater regions, aligns with the government’s National Deepwater Exploration Mission (Samudra Manthan) and its objective of attracting substantial investment into the energy sector.
Vedanta believes that achieving energy independence will require strong collaboration between industry, entrepreneurs, technology innovators and policymakers. The company has consistently advocated a “green revolution below the ground” — responsibly harnessing India’s natural resources while creating jobs, strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on imported energy.
Vedanta Oil & Gas has established one of India’s largest private sector upstream portfolios, with interests across 44 onshore and offshore blocks covering nearly 47,000 square kilometres in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Assam and Andhra Pradesh. The company’s portfolio includes conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resources, supported by advanced subsurface capabilities, technology-driven exploration and world-class engineering expertise.
With gross proved plus probable (2P) and contingent (2C) resources of 1.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent (bnboe), Vedanta Oil & Gas continues to focus on expanding domestic production, improving operational efficiency and delivering sustainable value for the nation, communities and shareholders. The company remains committed to responsible energy development and its long-term Net Zero goals while contributing to India’s journey towards energy security and economic growth.
