Mazak North America, in collaboration with the Northern Kentucky University (NKU) Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics (CINSAM), will host a special STEM showcase highlighting engineering projects developed by students participating in the “Machining Minds: A Mazak Technology Experience” junior academy. The event will take place at Mazak North America’s headquarters on June 26, bringing together students, educators, families and industry leaders to celebrate innovation and inspire future careers in advanced manufacturing.
The week-long STEM academy engaged 20 students entering grades seven through ten in practical engineering and manufacturing activities designed to introduce them to modern industrial technologies. Throughout the programme, participants worked alongside NKU mentors and Mazak manufacturing professionals, gaining first-hand experience in engineering principles, machining processes and automation technologies.
Students completed a range of practical projects during the academy, including designing and manufacturing custom metal nameplates, assembling hydraulic machines and programming robotic systems. The programme encouraged participants to apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts through collaborative problem-solving and project-based learning, offering valuable exposure to careers in advanced manufacturing and engineering.
The June 26 showcase will provide students with an opportunity to present their completed projects before families, educators and invited guests. Visitors will also have the chance to tour Mazak’s advanced manufacturing facility through guided catwalk tours, offering a closer look at modern production technologies and manufacturing operations.
Dan Janka, President of Mazak North America, will address the gathering and highlight the importance of investing in STEM education to develop the industry’s future workforce. He noted that the partnership with Northern Kentucky University reflects a long-term commitment to nurturing young talent by providing meaningful exposure to advanced technologies, engineering concepts and practical manufacturing experiences. According to Mr Janka, early engagement through hands-on learning can inspire students to pursue rewarding careers in manufacturing and technology. Northern Kentucky University President Cady Short-Thompson is also expected to attend the event, where she will interact with participating students and their families during a special open house organised as part of the programme.
The STEM academy forms part of a broader collaboration between Mazak North America and NKU aimed at strengthening workforce development across the Northern Kentucky region. The partnership supports career pathways through internships, employment opportunities, industry engagement and educational initiatives that connect students with real-world manufacturing environments.
Both organisations continue to work together on programmes that encourage students to explore engineering, computer-aided design (CAD), machining and automation while developing practical technical skills. These initiatives are designed to build awareness of modern manufacturing careers and create a stronger pipeline of skilled professionals for the future.
By combining academic mentorship with industrial expertise, the “Machining Minds” programme demonstrates how partnerships between educational institutions and manufacturers can equip young learners with valuable technical knowledge while fostering creativity, innovation and critical thinking. Through initiatives such as this STEM academy, Mazak North America and Northern Kentucky University are helping prepare the next generation of engineers, technicians and manufacturing professionals while supporting the continued growth of advanced manufacturing in the region.
