BEML Limited has strengthened its long-term innovation strategy with the inauguration of its Central Research Facility (CRF) at the iHub–Foundation for Science, Innovation and Development (FSID) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. The new facility has been established to accelerate advanced research, foster indigenous technology development, and support the creation of next-generation engineering solutions across strategic and industrial sectors.
The Central Research Facility was inaugurated by BEML Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy in the presence of Prof B.Gurumoorthy, Director, FSID-IISc; Om Prakash Subbarao, Chief Executive Officer, Core Labs-FSID-IISc; senior executives from BEML; and faculty members, researchers and students from IISc. Positioned as BEML’s primary research centre, the CRF will focus on developing advanced technologies through exploratory, applied and industry-oriented research. The facility has been created to accelerate innovation, transform research concepts into commercial applications, and strengthen the company’s technology leadership across defence, rail, mining, construction, aerospace and emerging mobility segments.
The research programmes at the facility will span a broad range of future-focused disciplines, including artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous systems, advanced materials, electronics, mechatronics, intelligent mobility, sustainable energy solutions, alternative propulsion technologies, advanced manufacturing and next-generation transportation systems. In addition to research activities, the facility will support technology demonstrations, modelling, simulation, product validation and intellectual property creation through patents and scientific publications.
The collaborative environment at the CRF is designed to bring together scientists, engineers and researchers from multiple disciplines to accelerate the development of innovative technologies that address evolving industrial and national requirements. By encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, the centre aims to shorten development cycles and facilitate the transition of research into practical engineering solutions.
Located within the IISc innovation ecosystem, the facility provides BEML with access to world-class research infrastructure, scientific expertise and technology incubation capabilities. The collaboration is expected to strengthen indigenous product development while enhancing the company’s ability to compete in global markets with advanced engineering solutions.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML Limited, said the establishment of the Central Research Facility marks an important milestone in the company’s transformation into a technology-driven organisation. He noted that the partnership with IISc will help develop future-ready capabilities in intelligent systems, sustainable mobility, advanced engineering and strategic technologies while supporting India’s technological self-reliance.
Research activities at the facility will be undertaken under the existing Master Research Agreement between BEML and IISc, enabling joint technology development, collaborative innovation and commercialisation of research outcomes. Through this initiative, BEML aims to strengthen its research capabilities, expand its innovation pipeline and contribute to India’s emergence as a global leader in advanced engineering and industrial technologies.
Operating under the Ministry of Defence India, BEML plays a vital role in supporting core sectors such as defence, rail, mining, and construction. With manufacturing facilities across Bengaluru, Kolar Gold Fields, Mysore, and Palakkad, and a legacy spanning over six decades, the company continues to drive innovation and excellence in engineering, positioning itself as a key player in global infrastructure development.
