Primetals Technologies and Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel JSC have successfully commissioned a new integrated steel production line at Hoa Phat’s manufacturing complex in Dung Quat, Quang Ngai Province, significantly enhancing the company’s production capabilities and strengthening its position in Vietnam’s rapidly expanding steel industry. The project includes two state-of-the-art slab casters, a high-capacity hot-strip mill, advanced automation systems and digital production technologies designed to improve quality, operational efficiency and manufacturing flexibility. With the new facility now fully operational, Hoa Phat has increased its annual production capacity by 5.5 million metric tonnes, enabling it to meet rising domestic and international demand for high-quality flat steel products.

The project achieved a rapid production ramp-up, with the facility manufacturing its first 1.5-millimetre low-carbon steel coil just six weeks after production began. Primetals Technologies has also issued the Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC) for the hot-strip mill following the successful completion of commissioning activities.

Commenting on the project, Mai Van Ha, Director at Hoa Phat, said the company selected Primetals Technologies’ casting and hot-strip mill solutions to support its strategy of expanding into higher-value steel markets while broadening its product portfolio. He noted that even before the project reached full commissioning, customers had responded positively to the quality of the slabs and hot-rolled coil products produced at the new facility.

The production line incorporates two-strand slab casters with a combined rated capacity of six million tonnes per year. The casters produce slabs measuring 230 millimetres in thickness and widths ranging from 900 to 1,650 millimetres at casting speeds of up to two metres per minute. Advanced technologies, including LevCon mould-level control, DynaWidth slab-width adjustment and the DynaFlex hydraulic oscillator, enhance production precision while improving slab quality and operational flexibility.

The new hot-strip mill has been designed to produce up to 5.5 million tonnes of coils annually. It manufactures coils weighing up to 36 tonnes with thicknesses ranging from 1.2 to 25.4 millimetres and widths between 900 and 1,650 millimetres. The facility features a slab-sizing press, reversing roughing mills, a seven-stand finishing mill, three down coilers, laminar cooling systems and advanced automation. Four finishing mill stands are equipped with Pair Cross technology to optimise strip profile and ensure consistent product quality.

To maximise operational performance, the plant has been equipped with Primetals Technologies’ comprehensive digital ecosystem. The Through-Process Quality Control (TPQC) platform enables continuous monitoring and analysis of production data across every stage of manufacturing, supporting quality improvement and process optimisation. A production management system further enhances logistics planning and inventory management throughout the facility.

Operators also benefit from the Asset Life Expert (ALEX) condition monitoring platform, which provides real-time equipment diagnostics, predictive maintenance recommendations and intelligent corrective actions. Together with advanced expert systems such as Contour and Flatness Optimizer and Hot Mill Steering Expert, the digital technologies help improve product consistency, increase equipment reliability and maximise plant productivity.

With the commissioning of the new production line, Hoa Phat has strengthened its manufacturing capabilities and expanded its ability to supply premium steel products for domestic and export markets. The investment reflects the company’s long-term strategy of adopting advanced manufacturing technologies while supporting Vietnam’s growing industrial development and infrastructure requirements.
