Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace (FWDA) has introduced FWD Supreme, India’s first AI-piloted fighter jet concept, marking a significant step in the country’s pursuit of next-generation autonomous combat aviation. Alongside the unveiling, the Bengaluru-based defence technology company announced that the first flight of its technology demonstrator, FWD Supreme Lite, is targeted for the third quarter of 2026.
The programme positions India among a select group of countries, including the United States, Germany and Turkey, that are actively developing AI-powered fighter aircraft capable of reshaping future aerial warfare. Unlike conventional unmanned aircraft that depend on remote human operators, the FWD Supreme has been conceived as an autonomous combat platform capable of independently analysing battlefield conditions, making tactical decisions and executing missions with minimal human intervention. The aircraft is being developed around FWDA’s proprietary Mobbing Doctrine, a combat strategy designed to deploy multiple AI-controlled fighter jets as coordinated swarm formations against high-value enemy assets.
The concept focuses on overwhelming adversaries through intelligent networking, autonomous mission execution and cost-effective force multiplication. Even if some aircraft are lost during combat, the remaining autonomous platforms are designed to continue the mission, placing sustained pressure on opposing forces while reducing operational costs associated with manned fighter operations.
Suhas Tejaskanda, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace, said the future of air superiority would increasingly rely on intelligent, networked combat systems rather than individual aircraft. He noted that AI-enabled collaborative operations have the potential to fundamentally transform the economics and dynamics of modern air combat.
The programme is being developed entirely in India at FWDA’s manufacturing facility in Bengaluru under the leadership of senior aerospace experts with decades of experience in fighter aircraft development, avionics, propulsion, flight control systems and military aviation programmes. The company plans to develop the FWD Supreme family in two variants. The FWD Supreme Lite, weighing around 250 kilograms, will serve as the initial technology demonstrator, while the FWD Supreme Heavy, with an approximate one-tonne take-off weight, is being designed for long-range autonomous combat, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and collaborative strike missions.
The first phase targets operational speeds of up to Mach 0.9, mission ranges between 700 and 1,000 kilometres, and fully autonomous take-off, mission execution and landing. Future development phases aim to introduce near-Mach 2 performance, enhanced stealth characteristics, multi-aircraft teaming capabilities and advanced AI-driven combat autonomy.
Through the FWD Supreme programme, Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace aims to strengthen India’s indigenous defence technology ecosystem and support the development of intelligent combat aircraft capable of meeting future operational requirements across air, land and maritime domains. Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace (FWDA) is a Bengaluru-based defence technology company dedicated to developing AI-powered warfare systems and next-generation autonomous combat aviation platforms. Established in 2022 by Suhas Tejaskanda, the company is focused on strengthening India’s self-reliance in advanced aerospace technologies while reducing dependence on imported defence systems.
FWDA has achieved several industry milestones in a short span. It became the first Indian company to receive DGCA type certification for an indigenously developed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and later introduced India’s first unmanned bomber aircraft, the FWD-200B, which successfully completed its maiden flight in September 2024.
The company further expanded its portfolio with the Kaal Bhairava E2A2 programme, India’s first AI-powered Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) autonomous combat aircraft. Developed entirely in India, the platform offers up to 30 hours of endurance and an operational range of 3,000 kilometres. Designed for precision strike missions, swarm operations, and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), the aircraft combines AI-driven autonomy with indigenous engineering.
Built without foreign dependencies, the Kaal Bhairava platform provides complete data sovereignty while eliminating external kill-switch vulnerabilities. The programme has already secured a USD 25 million export order from a South Asian nation and enabled FWDA to establish its first overseas manufacturing facility in Portugal, strengthening the company’s global presence.
The Kaal Bhairava Lite variant has also completed flight demonstrations for the Indian Army, including successful operations in high-altitude regions of Jammu & Kashmir. The platform continues to undergo evaluations with multiple Indian defence and security agencies. With a growing portfolio of autonomous combat aircraft, AI-enabled defence systems and advanced unmanned platforms, Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace is working to position India as a global centre for next-generation autonomous defence technologies while supporting the country’s long-term defence modernisation and export ambitions.
